Mel Marmer, 73, succumbed to the many health challenges he had endured for years. He bravely faced every obstacle with grace and calm perseverance. Known as a uniquely sweet soul, he embodied a kind and gentle spirit.
Mel was a voracious reader with an eclectic book collection. He could not get enough of pie, cake and cookies. He had a deep love of poetry. He was definitely baseball obsessed. He’s the author of The Year of the Blue Snow, The 1964 Philadelphia Phillies, published by The American Society of Baseball Research.
Born in Philadelphia, he received a BFA in Graphic Design at the University of the Arts. Among the many highlights of a creative life, Mel built his career in advertising, design and the arts, and later worked at the Weavers Way Co-op.
He is survived by his long time loving partner, Vickie Schafer Aspinwall, his beloved daughters Amy Green (John) and Alissa Marmer Vera (Will), his 5 grandsons Christopher, Johnny, Marco, Anthony and Logan, and his dog Ollie.
Mel and Vickie met in Pastorius Park 18 years ago and they built a wonderful life together in Chestnut Hill, as well as in their faraway home in a 13th century castle deep in the Italian countryside.
Mel leaves behind an amazing family made up of dear friends and healthcare providers who generously gave their loving support and encouragement to him throughout the years.
Mel’s life will be honored and celebrated at a private gathering of friends and family.
