Ghostly tales and creepy sights await at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education’s annual Halloween Hikes and Hayrides event this weekend, when its woodlands are transformed into an eerie wonderland perfect for Halloween fun.
The center’s 365-acre forest offers an ideal backdrop for getting into the Halloween spirit, and kids – and adults too – are encouraged to don their costumes and prepare for a trek through the moonlit woods.
"This is one of the most beloved and successful seasonal events where adults and children delight in the naturally spooky and nocturnal aspects of Halloween," said Erin Mooney, interim executive director of the Schuylkill Center. "Listening to the sounds of the night forest, delighting in all of the fun of Halloween, there's no better place to celebrate the season.”
Activities will include a walk with the nocturnal animals that live in the forest, as well as a themed “mystery” hike – and you’ll want to bring a flashlight so you can look for the clues that will be hidden amongst the shadows.
You’ll be able to test your skills with a range of Halloween-themed games and activities that will be on hand or snuggle up under the stars for an open-air screening of an appropriately spooky movie screening.
You won’t go hungry, either, as there will be a variety of food trucks on hand, serving up a range of mouth-watering treats. And you can top that off by roasting marshmallows over a warm, crackling campfire.
The event runs both Friday and Saturday evenings from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Registration is required as space is limited. Tickets are $26 per person or $13 for members. Kids under 2 are free. Full details and registration can be found online at www.schuylkillcenter.org.
