Caroline Thayer “Carrie” Lee died peacefully on October 9, 2023 at her home at Cathedral Village in Roxborough, Pa. Born on August 19, 1930 to Robert W. Lawson and Margaret Thayer Lawson, she grew up in Villanova and attended the Shipley School. After graduating in 1948, she attended Bradford Junior College in Massachusetts. Carrie married Dr. Charles T. “Chat” Lee, Jr. on October 23, 1954 and they raised their three children in Chestnut Hill where Chat practiced internal medicine.
Carrie was active in the community especially in her support for Chestnut Hill Hospital where she chaired the Women’s Auxiliary, volunteered at the Bird-in-Hand shop and headed up the Main Street Fair. Later in life she joined Chat and others as they started Wissahickon Hospice and she volunteered as one of the administrators of the fledgling palliative care provider. They also enjoyed delivering Meals On Wheels together along with their beloved Portuguese water dogs.
Carrie loved having family around and loved to cook. She and Chat happily hosted dinners and holidays at their house. Carrie was a lifelong bridge player, starting in teens at Shipley and through to her years at Cathedral Village. She and Chat also enjoyed golf, tennis, squash and especially trout and salmon fishing. In pursuit of more and more interesting fishing locations they traveled far and wide to England, Iceland, British Columbia, South America and New Zealand.
Carrie was a member of the Acorn Club, and she and Chat were members at different times of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, Sunnybrook Golf Club, Pohoqualine Fishing Association in McMichaels, PA and the Ausable Club in Keene Valley, NY.
Carrie is survived by her three children: Charles “Chip” Lee III, Margaret “Marggy” Ells (Tom), David Lee (Susan), and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband (2017) and her brother John Lawson.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to Chestnut Hill Meals on Wheels, 1710 Bethlehem Pike, Flourtown, PA 19031. (Jacob F. Ruth)
