The two-month-long street closure of the block of Highland Avenue that runs by Kilian’s Hardware store may finally be coming to an end. According to Henry O’Reilly, owner of the property at 30 W. Highland Ave., which is now being developed into a series of townhouses, the site contractor anticipates having the street work finished sometime this week. “After that, there’s one more plan that the city has to give us the okay on,” he said. “We anticipate being able to open the street back up and then, at some future date, have to close it again for the city sewer tie-in.” O’Reilly said the project has been slowed by the fact that the ground underneath much of Chestnut Hill is very rocky – replete with its trademark Wissahickon Schist. “That’s Chestnut Hill,” he said. “There’s a lot of rock there.” The project replaces what had been a roughly 5,000-square-foot office building on a .4-acre site with a 10,000-square- foot complex of eight townhouses, each of which has a two-car garage.

Last week’s debate was Seth Anderson-Oberman’s best chance of the campaign so far to introduce himself to hundreds of new voters. It was also his very first political debate. For incumbent Cindy Bass, it was a chance to defend her record. The result was a high-energy exchange that reflected the high-stakes nature of the race.
