Award-winning young adult author Elizabeth Acevedo will discuss her new book, “Family Lore,” the writer’s first in the adult genre, during a book signing event Monday, Aug. 7, at Greene Street Friends School in Germantown.

Acevedo’s latest is a story about a Dominican family whose women, many imbued with magical powers, have gathered for a “living wake”  that one sister is hosting for herself.

Acevedo will discuss the book with author and columnist Imani Perry, a professor at Princeton University. The event is hosted by Uncle Bobbie’s Coffee and Books in Germantown.

Acevedo, a renowned slam poet, won a 2018 National Book Award for “The Poet X,” her debut novel about a young girl in Harlem who uses her talent for poetry to express her hopes, fears and frustrations. Acevedo and the book also received the Michael L. Printz Award, the Pura Belpré Award, the Carnegie Medal, the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award, and the Walter Award.

Acevedo’s award-winning books also include “With Fire on High” and “Clap When You Land.”

“Family Lore” traces the lives of women in the Marte family, weaving together past and present, the Dominican Republic and New York City.  Acevedo will discuss the book with Perry, who is also a recipient of the National Book Award, won last year for “South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation.” She is also the author of  the award-winning “Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry.”
