Local activists held a vigil to mark one year since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine at the Unitarian Society of Germantown at 6511 Lincoln Drive on Friday. “As we mark this tragic anniversary, we continue to show our solidarity with people in Ukraine,” said vigil coordinator Mary Kalyna, a Ukrainian American activist. The Unitarian Society of Germantown has demonstrated support for Ukraine throughout the last year, including hosting a weekly vigil during the evening rush hour on Lincoln Drive, hanging a large banner on the façade of the church (“We Stand with Ukraine”), and planting a memorial sunflower garden. “We support the demands of Ukraine for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and for the military aid they need for a swift victory in order to prevent further death and destruction,” said Kalyna, whose parents were refugees from Ukraine after WWII. She has close relatives in the country.
