Tap into creativity for this giving season

The holiday season is a perfect time for artisanal treats and crafts, and homemade presents can be especially charming when you don’t want to arrive at the party empty-handed.

Thoughtful, budget-friendly DIY presents can delight your hosts, and bring personalized handmade warmth to all your upcoming holiday parties.

Food gifts are an easy entry point. Baking fresh bread, or whipping up a jar of soup mixes is a good bet, as it is hot chocolate, cookies or other tasty treats. For the zero-proof crowd, assemble a kit for an apothecary-inspired night of signature mocktails and elixirs featuring your custom creation of aromatic bitters, shrubs, syrups and garnishes.

Feeling ambitious? Assemble a basket of seasonal goodies like peppermint bark, spiced nuts and maple syrup. Or skip the sweets and instead gift savory baked goods like parmesan crisps, pretzel crisps, or butter crackers. They pair perfectly with the charcuterie boards that seem ubiquitous this time of year.

For the wellness-focused host, blend some healing herbal tea packets, using spices said to aid digestion like ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and cardamom. Or fill amber bottles with custom essential oil rollers that evoke the season, like those that blend pine and citrus, or have the festive scents of cranberry and cinnamon. Thoughtful and consumable gifts like these offer an extra dose of TLC along with some memorable flair at the party.

Crafty types can take inspiration from websites like Pinterest or Etsy too – think fashion-glittered cinnamon sticks or custom wine charms tied with ribbon. Design modern dip-dyed napkins or upcycle thrift finds into one-of-a-kind reindeer mugs and snowman platters. Decorated clipboards, salt dough ornaments and faux Sugar Plum poppies make great hostess gifts too.

Lean into nostalgia with homemade goodies like glittery pine cone fire starters, frankincense and myrrh bath salts, or spiced orange pomanders ornamented with cloves. Just be sure to make extras – these festive touches have a way of multiplying across party tables and guest room nightstands.

There’s also that ever-popular stalwart, the handmade candle. Adorn it with touches of greenery, cranberries, rosemary or pinecones, and tuck it into an upcycled tea cup so hosts can enjoy it long after the flame is gone.

guests depart.

Crafters can also design one-of-a-kind hostess presents like chunky knit infinity scarves, clay jewelry, embroidered linen napkins, macramé plant holders, quilted patchwork phone cases or stamped leather luggage tags and keychains. Upcycle sweaters into mittens or a pillow cover too. Even quick but creative holiday cards made pretty with paper cuts or watercolors beat the generic boxed versions. DIY bath and body products like sugar scrubs, layered shower jellies and fizzy bath bombs make nice self-care presents as well.

Handy with a power tool? Consider a handsome cutting board or cheese platters to elevate future gathering spreads. Or assemble a custom spice rack, wine caddy or cocktail carrying case – perfect for toting libations between the kitchen and living room with ease.

Homemade food gifts do come with a greater chance of allergens so be thoughtful if gifting anything edible or drinkable. But these heartfelt DIY presents tend to earn greater appreciation and admiration than yet another bottle of wine, or generic holiday decor bound for the exchange pile. And tapping into your creativity also has a way of amplifying the holiday spirit.
