Ahead of the Nov. 3 general election, the Local invited several candidates running for local and federal offices to answer questions submitted by Northwest Philadelphia organizations.
Participants were Germantown United Community Development Corporation, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals from Temple Health – Chestnut Hill Hospital, the Alden Park Tenants Association, and a final question from the Local.
Each group submitted one question for a total of five. The Local gave each candidate one minute to think about each answer and two minutes to respond on camera. At the end, candidates were given an additional two minutes to discuss their platforms.
The candidates received only one chance to respond to the questions, with no re-shoots, and did not receive the questions prior to the shoot.
Running in Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, Democratic nominee state Rep. Chris Rabb and independent Dennis Mahoney look to fill retiring U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans’ seat. Rabb was out of the country and did not participate in this forum.
Locally, state Sen. Art Haywood is running for re-election against Republican challenger Todd Johnson in Pennsylvania’s 4th Senate District, which represents Northwest Philadelphia and parts of Montgomery County.
The Local also interviewed state Rep. Tarik Khan and Chris Johnson, who won the Democratic primaries in Pennsylvania’s 194th and 200th state House districts, respectively. Both are running unopposed and Johnson is running to fill the Mt. Airy seat currently represented by Rabb.
In the transcribed versions of the interviews, the Local lightly edited for clarity and removed filler or repeated words.
