Two undefeated swim teams in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies met last Friday at Malvern Prep, where nearby Villa Maria Academy holds its home meets.
The visitors, the Mount St. Joseph Academy Magic, emerged from the Chester County encounter with a 102-81 league victory, seemingly headed toward another AACA championship. The Mounties still have to swim a league meet against Gwynedd Mercy Academy, but the Monarchs lost to the Villa Hurricanes in the middle of January, 101-85. All told, the Magic appear to be in a strong position with the Catholic Academies championships coming up on February 11.
With no divers on the team the year, the Mount was swept by Villa in that event last Friday, 13-0. The Magic won two of the three relay races, the 200 yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle relay.
In individual events, junior Katie Scanlon won the 100 yard butterfly (in one minute, 5.42 seconds) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:19.54), Maya McCottry (a senior who will row crew at the University of Delaware) won the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.51), and Charli Schoen (a freshman out of Norwood Fontbonne Academy) won the breaststroke (1:10.75).
In the 100 back, junior Rose Schmidt was the runner-up, giving the Magic a one-two finish there, and she was also second in 100 yard freestyle. Senior Zoe Truitt placed second in both the 200 and 500 freestyle, establishing a new PR in the longer race. Another 12th-grader, Aurora Martin, earned second-place points in the 50 yard freestyle.
The Magic had started the meet with a one-two effort in the 200 yard medley relay. Winning with a time of 1:58.62 were McCottry, Schmidt, Martin, and sophomore Kelly McDonald, and the second quartet consisted of freshman Emma Gladulich, Schoen, and sophomores Maddie Dudley and Layla Seward.
In the middle of the meet, the Mount won the 200 free relay in 1:44.44 with freshman Grace Detwiler, McDonald, Martin, and Scanlon. In the 400 free, Mount St. Joe came in second with Schmidt, Dudley, Martin, and Scanlon.
Between them, Villa Maria's Gwen Devenney and Hailey Rittenhouse won all four individual freestyle races, and both were part of the Hurricanes' victorious 400 free relay.
