This year's compressed golf season schedule put Mount St. Joseph Academy in a bind last week.
On Tuesday, the Magic were slated to play in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies championships, when they would be aiming to win the league title for the 18th year in a row. Earlier in the month, MSJ senior Clare Gimpel had qualified to play in the PIAA state individual championships in York. This two-day event was staged last Monday and Tuesday, which meant that the Mount team would be missing its best player at the AACA match.
Magic fans needn't have worried. Led by junior league champion Caroline Gola with a round of 36, the Mount cruised to its 18th title. In the team scoring (derived from the top five individual scores of each school in a nine-hole round), Mount St. Joe won easily with a score of 218, while runner-up Villa Joseph Marie tallied 272 points and third-place Gwynedd Mercy had 291.
The Mount had seven players earn all-star recognition, while no other school managed more than two.
Out at the PIAA championships in York, Gimpel turned in a five-over-par score of 77, which tied her for seventh place overall with Lindsay Powanda of Mount Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh. Another golfer from Southeastern Pennsylvania's District 1, Victoria Kim of West Chester East, became individual champion, tying for top score with a round of 72 and then winning a playoff.
Back at the AACA championships last Tuesday at Honeybrook Golf Club in Chester County, Gola's winning effort for the Mounties was backed up by a score of 42 by junior Nora Blatney and a 46 by senior Sofia Gambone. All three girls are graduates of Norwood Fontbonne Academy, as is Gimpel.
Also earning AACA all-star status were senior Reilly Kelley and junior Alle Petkunas, each with a score of 47, and senior Gwen DeLeo and sophomore Gabi Courtney, who each made it around in 48 strokes.
Mount mentor John Mischler, now wrapping up his fifth season as head coach of the Magic, has been named the PIAA State Girls Golf Coach of the Year for 2020. Jules Quinones, a coach and former Mount parent like Mischler, has also worked extensively with the team.
