Soul Line Dancing

Shake your groove thing in a soul line dancing session Feb. 16 and 23 at the Center on the Hill, part of The Chestnut Hill Presbyterian Church. On the third and fourth Thursdays of every month you can twist and shout to R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and, of course, The Sound of Philadelphia. No partner is needed and all levels are welcome. Gloria Kingcade, a master soul line dance teacher, will take the lead on the floor. The sessions are 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. $5 registration is required. Candidate Meet-and-Greet

Meet and mingle with candidates for mayor, city council, city commissioner, controller, judgeships and other political offices at a 9th Ward Democratic Committee get together, 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Henry Library, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. The school is at 501 W. Springfield Avenue. Attendees can also get to know local committee people and sign candidate petitions. Storytime with ACO Jess 

Bring your little ones and start your Saturday with a walk at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education followed by storytime with ACO Jess, the author of Raccoon Rescue, Sat., Feb 18, 2023, noon to 1:00 p.m. ACO Jess will transport you into the world of an animal control officer, a story based on true events. Guests will get an insight into what it's like to be out in the world rescuing wildlife. The.event is free, but to register visit schuylkillcenter.org. Five Fridays

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church continues its Five Fridays series Friday, Feb. 17, with a performance by John Bullard on banjo and Markus Compton on piano. The evening’s program includes works by Telemann, Bach, and Marcello. Proceeds benefit two local organizations that combat hunger and homelessness in Northwest Philadelphia: Face to Face Germantown and Family Promise of Philadelphia (formerly Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network). Performance is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 for general admission ($5 for students) and are available online or at the door. A reception to meet the artists follows the performance. Dystopian Film Festival

Join your fellow film buffs for a different version of reality. Lovett-Memorial Library in Mt. Airy will screen films that explore an imagined society on Fridays in February.  “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17.  For information, visit freelibrary.org/lovett. A Silent Walk

Join Amy and Kate for a mindful saunter, a 2.5 mile contemplative walk, Sun, Feb. 19, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.  Enjoy a full sensory experience as the sun sets on these beautiful trails. The walk is most appropriate for adults and youth 16 and older. Pace will be set by the group. Feel free to bring a flashlight. Wissahickon Stewardship

Would you like to be part of keeping Wissahickon Valley Park beautiful and sustainable? Then join long-time steward of the Wissahickon and the Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) Volunteer of the Year David Bower for two volunteer stewardship projects. Join him Wed. Feb. 22, 9:00 a.m. to noon, for projects that may include trash clean-ups and trail improvements. Then, Bower will lead another project Sun. Feb. 26, 9 a.m. to noon, at Thomas Mansion. At the mansion, volunteers will sustain recent FOW plantings of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, and care for some of the beautiful and historic gardens. No experience is needed. Woodmere Jazz

Woodmere Art Museum continues its popular jazz series, a partnership with the LifeLine Music Coalition, and presents a tribute to classic R&B, featuring vocalist Roy Richardson and the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble. Expect to hear the music of artists including Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Smokey Robinson & Miracles. Friday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 ($15 for members). Jazz concerts continue on Fridays through the spring. Upcoming music will feature the songs of Marvin Gaye, Chaka Khan and Earth,Wind and Fire. Black Unitarian Universalist History

Unitarian Universalists of Mt. Airy will present “From Controversy to Sea Change: Black Unitarian Universalist History,” a special Sunday service on Feb. 26. The event will feature the music of Actual Proof featuring Greg Moore and Bobby Zankel along with presentations by various speakers addressing the history of African Americans in the denomination.
