Last Tuesday the number of undefeated teams in the women's college summer basketball league was reduced to two as Team Purple (West Chester U.) overcame Team Red (Chestnut Hill College), 62-52. This left Purple with a 3-0 record, the same as Jefferson University's Team Black. Black had a bye on Tuesday, while on Thursday Purple had a bye.

Black won by forfeit on Thursday over Team Sun, which only turned out four players and was loaned a few athletes by Team Black so that they could play a pick-up game. Bouncing back with a win on Thursday, Team Red was tied with Team Sky Blue (Holy Family U.) for third place at 3-1.

In Tuesday's tilt between previously undefeated Red and Purple, the West Chester bunch held a 30-27 edge over CHC Red at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Red drew within two points of the leaders, then Purple began to pull away, making outside shots that the CHC group was missing. One Red player, junior transfer Bridie McCann, was on-target with a pair of three-pointers in the period, but Team Purple, which did its share of scoring from the paint as well as the perimeter, took a 54-42 advantage into the fourth round.

An early "three" had Purple up by 15, then Red put together a stretch of offense with a follow by junior Siobhan Boylan, a transition lay-up by incoming freshman Caraline Herb, and a trey from the left wing by a senior out of Penn Charter, Kait Carter.

This closed up the score to 57-49 with more than six minutes remaining, then the scoring pace slowed and the next two baskets were a three-pointer and a short jumper for Purple. McCann's third three-pointer of the night locked in the final score at 62-52.

The junior would register 13 points for the summer Griffins and classmate Bri Rider would have 17 while Herb finished with seven. For Purple, Michelle Kozicki posted a game-high 19 points and Plymouth Whitemarsh alum Anna McTamney had 12.

Earlier on the same court, CHC grads Lauren Crim, Cassie Sebold, and Abbey Spratt played with the Team Pink alumni group, most of whom graduated from NCAA Division II schools. It was no cakewalk, but Pink prevailed, 49-42, against Royal Blue, one of the league's multi-sourced teams of Division III players (the so-called "draft" teams). Crim hit three treys and had a game-high 12 points, while Sebold finished with 10.

Also on Tuesday, Germantown Academy graduate Abby Marino ('23) was in action for the first time with Team Sun, which mixes Division II and III players. The Sun squad succumbed to a DIII draft team, Kelly Green, 52-40. Marino, a three-sport athlete at GA, will play basketball for the Illinois Institute of Technology.

In a bout between full teams of Division II and Division III players, DII Sky Blue (Holy Family) knocked off Maroon (Arcadia), 63-54.

Maroon remained winless on Thursday, falling 61-48 to the Royal Blue "draft" squad. The strongest of the draft teams, Kelly Green (2-2) gave Holy Family Sky Blue a battle, but Sky won it, 50-41.

Chestnut Hill's Team Red took on the alumni squad (Pink), which was missing Spratt and a few other members of the roster. It was close in the middle of the opening period, then Team Red surged to a 17-8 lead by the end of the quarter. Three minutes into the second frame, a rallying Team Pink closed the gap to one point with a three-pointer by CHC grad Cassie Sebold. After this Team Red pulled away again for a 33-22 halftime lead.

Jenkintown High School alum Jen Kremp canned two three-point field goals early in round three to trim Pink's deficit to 36-30, and there was still a six-point Team Red advantage at the end of the third quarter (46-40).

Pink's percentage on the first shots of a given possession was markedly low, and Team Red capitalized on this by attacking the defensive boards.

Near the middle of the fourth quarter, CHC's Carter nailed back-to-back three's from opposite sides of the court to spread the score to 59-42. Team Pink couldn't make much headway after this, and the final score was 67-51.

Carter finished with nine points, as did sophomore Avery White, while Rider scored eight. Forced to play closer to the basket due to the absence of 6'2" Emily Sekerak, 5'11" senior Lindsey Lane led the team with 14 points. Juniors Siobhan Boylan and Bridey McCann each hit two three-pointers and wound up with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

For Team Pink, Kremp's game-high 18 points included five three-pointers.
