Letter: Bikes, not cars

While I applaud the Mt. Airy Learning Tree’s annual tour of private gardens in our neighborhoods, as reported in the Local of May 26, I must gently take issue with the statement in that nicely-written article that “The tour is self-guided … so attendees will need a car.”

Many Philadelphians lack a car and travel by bicycle to address their needs. Many others commute by bicycle from our bike-friendly neighborhoods to other parts of the city, distant or nearby, whether or not they own a car. While I applaud the Mt. Airy Learning Tree’s annual tour of private gardens in our neighborhoods, as reported in the Local of May 26, I must gently take issue with the statement in that nicely-written article that “The tour is self-guided … so attendees will need a car.”

Many Philadelphians lack a car and travel by bicycle to address their needs. Many others commute by bicycle from our bike-friendly neighborhoods to other parts of the city, distant or nearby, whether or not they own a car. On entering the city on Germantown Avenue, we see a sign saying that we are a “Bike-Friendly Community.” I respectfully suggest that when reporting on an upcoming event it would be more inclusive to suggest alternative modes of transportation, such as a bicycle.
