Democratic candidates swept all races in the Northwest Philadelphia and its nearby suburbs, powered in large part by voters in the 9th and 22nd wards who cast more than 90 percent of their votes to Democratic candidates.*

The 9th ward covers all of Chestnut Hill and a portion of the northern end of Mt. Airy. The 22nd picks up a large part of the rest of East and West Mt. Airy, between Mt. Pleasant and Johnson west of Germantown Avenue and between Mt. Airy Ave. and Washington Lane to the east.

State wide Democratic races that were won easily by incumbents Governor Tom Wolf and Senator Bob Casey Jr. were given a healthy helping hand by 9th and 22nd ward voters by large margins. Wolf picked up 10,821 votes (97.02%) from the 22nd and 7,778 votes (91.11%) in the 9th to beat Republican challenger Scott Wagner, who picked up only 918 votes total in both wards.

Casey collected 10,807 votes (96.8%) in the 22nd ward and 7,730 (90.28%) in the 9th to soundly defeat Republican challenge Lou Barletta who picked up only 984 votes total.

In the U.S. House, incumbent congressman Dwight Evans coasted to victory with 10,783 votes (97.31%) in the 22nd ward and 7618 (89.99 %) in the 9th to defeat Republican challenger Bryan Leib in the new US 3rd district.

In Montgomery County’s new 4th District, Glenside resident and Democratic Candidate Madeleine Dean gathered 63.94 % of the vote to beat Republican Dan David. Dean, who will be a freshman US Representative, was one of more than 100 women elected to the US House on Election day.

State Legislative Races

Incumbent State Senator Art Haywood won a 2nd term in the 4th District, picking up 10,798 votes (97.41) votes in the 22nd Ward and 7,666 (90.29%) in the 9th to defeat Republican challenger Ron Holt, who collected 1,111 votes between the two wards.

In the State’s 200th district, Democratic Rep. Chris Rabb was unchallenged and automatically earned his 2nd term.

In Montgomery County, Democratic State Representative Steve McCarter, who represents Glenside and Springfield Township, soundly won reelection in the 154th district. He earned 81.47 percent of the vote to defeat Republican challenger, Kathleen Bowers.

* At the time of this writing, 100% of the vote was reported in the 9th ward and 97% in the 22nd.
