CHCA approves firehouse plans, approves Local budget

Following up on the previous update on the renovations to the Engine 37 firehouse, the Chestnut Hill Community Association officially voted at its monthly Board of Directors meeting to support the project’s necessary variances. This approval came after the Development Review Committee voted on the same measure at its meeting and recommended that the CHCA do the same.

As with the DRC, the CHCA’s approval of the project comes with the provisions that the neighbors continue to be included in future planning, particularly in regard to landscaping on the property and the color and tone of the pavement. Going forward, the renovations will also have to ensure that any changes made to the original historic structure can be reversed, as mandated by the Philadelphia Historic Commission.

“We will be diligent in preserving every piece of the historic fabric that is removed due to the expansions of this historic facility,” said Vince Krakauskas, design and construction project manager for the Philadelphia Department of Public Property.

The business of the Local was also an important topic of the meeting, as Hill resident Ellen Badger was formally approved as the newest member of the paper’s own Board of Directors. In addition, the Local’s budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year was also accepted. The passed budget included reduced payments to the Chestnut Hill Community Association and revised shared office expenses with the CHCA that benefit the Local. Those changes, hashed out in a series of meetings between the paper and the CHCA resulted in what CHCA and Local board member Richard Snowden called “the best possible compromise.”

Other housekeeping items included the appointment of CHCA representatives at meetings for the Chestnut Hill Business Association and Friends of Jenks, an update on the CHCA’s office construction and reminders for upcoming events such as the Black and White Gala (October 14) and the Chestnut Hill Tree Planting (November 18).

The next CHCA Board of Directors meeting is set for Thursday, September 28 at 7 p.m. in Blossom Philadelphia, 102 E. Mermaid Lane.
