The Rev. Kent Matthies, pastor of the Unitarian Society of Germantown, said 2016 marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Unitarian Society of Germantown and that the church has been celebrating this milestone all year.

The final event in church's celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 15. State Sen. Art Haywood (D-4) will speak at the church service. Afterwards, the Rev. Daniel Gregoire and Matthies will discuss the church's roots and their hopes for the future.

“For 150 years, people have gathered in this community based in theologies of love, courage and hope,” Matthies said. “In this anniversary, we are delighted to learn more deeply and celebrate the historic efforts people made based in this mission. Today the religious landscape in America is changing quickly.

“Going forward we are called upon to make courageous efforts to meet the spiritual needs and aspirations of the wider community. We take bold risks and not fear failure. We are called upon to be partners with our neighbors in growing spiritual health, justice making and a raucous celebration of life.”
