Timothy V. Alexander, 86, of Chestnut Hill died peacefully on May 5, 2024 at Fox Chase Cancer Center after an unexpected complication related to his Esophageal Cancer which he courageously battled for 9 months. Born on August 17th 1937, in Philadelphia (Germantown) to Catherine (nee Felose) and John J. Alexander Jr. He is survived by his identical twin Thomas Alexander, and younger brother Joseph (Connie), beloved husband of Mary Lou and loving father to Doreen Alexander Child (Brian), and Megan Hollingsworth (Joe), adored grandfather of John, Steven, and Colin Hollingsworth, cherished by many nieces and nephews, and dear friends. Was preceded in death by his parents and siblings John, Jim, and Mary.
He graduated from North Catholic HS, then served in the United States Marine Corps with the 1st Battalion 8th Marine Regiment/2nd Marine Division from 1956-1962 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He was a platoon leader in the mortarman squad, fought oversees in Beirut, Lebanon, and was a proud member of the VFW Chestnut Hill Post.
While working at the Pennsylvania Railroad for 10 years, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education from St. Joseph’s University night school, then his Master’s in Special Education from Penn State University through the GI bill. He taught at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Mt. Airy, and retired from The Pathway School in Jeffersonville, PA after a total career in education of over 35 years.
He was a lifetime member of the Chestnut Hill Bocce Club and gave generously of his time, volunteering on the Fourth of July Committee for the kids for many years.
Throughout his life, he freely offered his time giving back to others, spending countless hours teaching sign language at the Chestnut Hill Library, calling cadence on Memorial Day in the parks in the Hill, and placing flags on the graves of veterans for over 20 years.
After retiring from teaching, he enjoyed serving the community by working as a Chestnut Hill Parking Ambassador, up until a month ago. He led an active lifestyle having many hobbies including painting, collecting political buttons, baseball cards and train sets. He was known for fearlessly befriending the parking lot squirrels, and for being a die-hard Phillies fan.
A life well lived, he will forever be remembered for his random acts of kindness, sense of humor, and how he enjoyed making life a little bit lighter for everyone.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Tim’s life at visitation, on Tuesday May 14th from 6pm-8pm at Jacob F. Ruth Funeral Home at 8413 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19118, and visitation again Wednesday May 15th at 10am at Our Mother of Consolation Church, at 9 E. Chestnut Hill Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, followed by mass at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Tim’s memory to Future Health Now/Elder Care Advisor Company 196 W.
