Memories from another former camp counselor

Posted

I thoroughly enjoyed Len Lear’s story about his experiences as a camp counselor, his own humble background and his being taken aback by the behaviors and sense of entitlement exhibited by some of the campers, particularly that of the 14-year-old boy, son of a corporate executive, who was in his bunk.

I related to much of what Len described, having been a camp counselor myself in the Poconos, Camp Tioga in Lake Como, PA, for several years. We both had this experience over 60 years ago. The difference is that I had also been privileged (but not spoiled) to have been a camper at that same camp for several years, when Len hadn’t ever been away because of financial hardship.

We also performed “Guys and Dolls.” My mother was the Music Director and was also a counselor when I was a camper.

I starred in “Pajama Game” and remember having to kiss a boy I didn’t particularly like! I think that was easier, though, than what happened to Len when he forgot a line and someone yelled it to him from backstage so everyone could hear it from “as far away as New Jersey!"

I enjoyed the puns, although some were “pun”-ishment, the spooky story that he remembered and that I also happened to hear around the campfire on Friday nights, his humor with the kids, the myriad of activities and what we both have now, the wonderful memories.

Len, if you write a story again, use a pen. Then you won’t have to ask, as Shakespeare did, “2B or not 2B?"
