Just like pumpkin spice lattes, fall brings Tree Tenders’ fall planting to Chestnut Hill. On Nov. 18, the group will be planting 28 new trees in our neighborhood.
We can all do our part to combat climate change, help preserve biodiversity and enhance our natural environment by planting trees. Anyone who would like to volunteer is welcome.
Tree Tenders is a part of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, famous not only for the Philadelphia Flower Show but also for planting more than a half million trees throughout the city.
While reducing the heat island effect, and supporting endangered bird and insect populations, trees are also essential to helping manage rainfall from storm events. They also enhance the beauty of our unique neighborhood.
Even the falling leaves of the Autumn season are a valuable resource, as they can be mulched to put around trees or added to garden beds. They serve to nourish the soil and provide a habitat for insects and birds. Leaves are especially essential to our signature lighting bugs, whose numbers have been in decline.
If you want a free street tree, applications for the Spring 2024 planting season will be available only until December 4th, 2023.
And now PHS has also made yard trees available. Yard trees that PHS Tree Tenders plant must provide a public service by being planted in the first 10 feet off the sidewalk in church yards, school yards, libraries, and occasionally small parks not managed by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. This fall, Chestnut Hill Tree Tenders will plant trees at Norwood-Fontbonne and Jenks schools.

Thanks to volunteer support, Chestnut Hill Tree Tenders has planted over 250 trees in recent years.
