Trailblazers cross paths

Sure, the boys of summer are back, but Rabbi Rebecca Alpert, one of the first ordained rabbis and professor of religion emerita at Temple University, wants you to know about “The Kid” of summer.

Baseball pioneer Edith “The Kid” Houghton, who played shortstop for the Philadelphia Bobbies women’s professional team and was the first full-time female scout in professional baseball, will be the subject of a book discussion May 6 at Chestnut Hill Library. Alpert, author of “Out of Left Field: Jews and Black Baseball, and Religion and Sports” and a trailblazer herself will discuss Houghton at 5:30 p.m.
