Hospital drive for new wing flies higher with $5000 gift
Chestnut Hill Hospital moved in sight of the $2 million mark in its drive for funds to build a new wing on the main building, when the Philadelphia Foundation last week presented $5000 to the development program.

The mayor makes it Young Audiences Week
It’s Young Audiences Week in Philadelphia this week — all week, by proclamation of Mayor Tate. The organization, which has grown in scope to sponsor more than 700 concerts yearly in the Philadelphia schools, as is well known by all schools in Chestnut Hill, was cited for its volunteer contributions to the cultural growth of Philadelphia’s children at a ceremony held this week.

‘Basically Bach’ gets CHCA’s endorsement
Basically Bach, the three-day music festival proposed for next fall, earned the “tentative approval” of the Community Association’s board of directors last Thursday night. The board also authorized Association President Madeleine K. Butcher to appoint two representatives to a 12-man festival committee which will let the CHCA’s board know whether or not sufficient community support exists to assure the festival’s success.
Will real estate tax hike hurt?
What are Chestnut Hill Realtors saying about the projected 29% increase in real estate taxes? What effect will it have on homeowners?
“None at all,” says Robert Glendinning of Emlen and Company. “The Hill won’t be hit too hard. The tax rise is far overdue. We’ve been so far undertaxed for so many years that it’s ridiculous. It doesn’t come near catching us up with the townships.”

Norwood-Fontbonne mourns Challenger tragedy
The students at Norwood-Fontbonne Academy were either watching on TV or listening on the radio on Tuesday morning when the Challenger lifted off into space and then exploded, taking with it, ostensibly, the lives of its seven passengers.
“Everyone was shocked,” Sister Jean Laurich, S.S.J., told the Local later. “We have been praying for everyone concerned ever since the tragedy.”
Hill doctor helps war refugees in Pakistan
A Chestnut Hill orthopedic surgeon has just returned from several weeks volunteer work in Pakistan as part of an orthopedic overseas group committed to helping third-world countries. Refugees from the Afghanistan-Russian War have been pouring into Pakistan in astonishing numbers each week, according to Ronald Horvath. Horvath was at first reluctant to speak with a newspaper reporter for fear his adventures should appear to be those of an altruist, but the Local found that he told a story of sadness, human suffering and unbelievable courage.

February blood drive to honor Ted Haines
Ted Haines, regarded by many as a hero for the way he lived and died, will be honored at the February 19 CHCA-sponsored blood drive, according to a recent announcement by Blood Drive co-chairs, Marlene and Christopher Lally.
“From now on, the February drive will be conducted in Ted’s memory,” said the Lallys. “It will be known as the Ted Haines CHCA Blood Drive.”
Health Committee wins in a drive against passive smoke
The Health Committee of the Chestnut Hill Community Association was a winner in its continuing battle over passive smoke at the CHCA board meeting of January 25. The board passed a resolution posed by Vicki Lachman, chair of the committee, that encourages all restaurants, stores and other public places in Chestnut Hill to maintain smoke-free environments.

‘Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!’
This Monday, Chestnut Hill welcomed the first of many fiberglass animal statues that will line Germantown Avenue and Bethlehem Pike as part of the Business Association’s “AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill” fundraiser.
Communities that host this fundraiser welcome a number of fiberglass animal statues to their streets. They find sponsors and artists to pay for and decorate them, and the finished products are put on display around town, until a final auction where the money raised goes to the community or another organization.

Fresh Market grocery opens to big crowds
The time had finally arrived. On Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., the much-anticipated Fresh Market grocery store, at 8208 Germantown Ave., opened its doors to Hillers and other nearby residents.
Suspect arrested in multiple Northwest Phila. robberies
A man was arrested Jan. 13 in connection with eight robberies in Northwest Philadelphia.
Captain Sekou Kinebrew, of the 14th Police District, called the arrest a good example of community and police collaboration.
