State Sen. Sharif Street (D) announced Monday that he will resign as chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party in September, ahead of his run for U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans’ (D) seat in 2026.

The state committee will hold an election for Street’s replacement at their next meeting in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 6, with Street set to step down upon the election of his successor.

In a press release, Street said, “I took on this role to build a Democratic Party that was more inclusive, more united, and more powerful. … Together, we’ve done exactly that, delivering historic victories, strengthening our grassroots, and expanding our coalition across Pennsylvania. ... I’m proud of the progress we’ve made and confident the party is strong, energized, and ready to meet the challenges ahead. Now it’s time to make space for the next chapter of leadership so we can keep building on that progress.”

After serving as vice chair from 2018-22, Street was elected party chair in 2022, becoming the first Black man and the first Muslim to lead the party.

In a press release, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) said, “Senator Sharif Street has spent his career serving the people of Pennsylvania and I’m thankful for his continued public service and leadership of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party over the past three years.”

After Street announced his campaign for Evans’ seat, some within the party called for him to step down from his position to run for Congress. In July, Shapiro told reporters in Harrisburg he questioned if Street could manage the position while running an election campaign.

State Rep. Chris Rabb (D), who represents Mt. Airy and parts of Chestnut Hill and West Oak Lane, joined in calling for Street’s resignation in July. Rabb is also running for Evans’ seat in 2026. Evans announced in June he would not seek reelection

State Rep. Tarik Khan (D), who represents Manayunk, Roxborough, and parts of Chestnut Hill and East Falls, told the Local, “I extend my deep gratitude to Senator Street for his tireless and selfless service as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. His leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to fairness and opportunity for all Pennsylvanians will leave a lasting mark on both our party and our Commonwealth.”
