I am writing in appreciation of the recent action taken by the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners to support its residents. On Aug. 13, the board published a statement clarifying the expected responsibilities of our local police force in federal immigration actions.

I am writing in appreciation of the recent action taken by the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners to support its residents. On Aug. 13, the board published a statement clarifying the expected responsibilities of our local police force in federal immigration actions.
The statement, posted on the township’s website, reads in part, “Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility, and local police departments are not required to enforce federal immigration laws unless they have a formal agreement to do so. The Springfield Township Police Department has no such agreement and does not intend to enter into any such agreement in the future.”
This board’s statement is, to me, a brave act at a dangerous time. Some would prefer to turn away from the possible threat of retribution by a vindictive administration or ignore the legitimate fear of neighbors and friends in our communities. I am encouraged our board acted.
Recently Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has been active in Montgomery County municipalities. Masked agents raided a supermarket in Norristown and without warrants removed 14 people, disappearing them into a cruel immigration system contemptuous of the legal rights the U.S. Constitution promises all. Many people are shaken by current events throughout this country, which are reminiscent of authoritarian/fascist regimes that attempt to control by fear, cruelty, and raw power. (If you still think this country is clearing out convicted violent felons you haven’t been paying attention. Please become better informed.)
The bully wants to see how much we will take. The Springfield Township Board of Commissioners has taken a step. We who are fortunate enough to not be in the cross hairs at the moment (First they came for the immigrants…) need to use our voices to say “NO” and to support and protect our friends and neighbors who are vulnerable at this time.
