Back in 2006, when Silversun Pickups emerged from Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood to release their debut album “Carnavas,” the band was alternately derided and hailed for their ‘90s-throwback sound and lead singer Brian Aubert’s near-mimicry of Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan. That album ended up on many an iPod belonging to nostalgic Gen Xers wanting to keep the grunge party going in the wake of the Pumpkins’ messy breakup and millennials who encountered one of Silversun Pickups’ hits — “Lazy Eye” or “Well Thought …

Silversun Pickups bring ‘Physical Thrills’ to the Keswick

Back in 2006, when Silversun Pickups emerged from Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood to release their debut album “Carnavas,” the band was alternately derided and hailed for their ‘90s-throwback sound and lead singer Brian Aubert’s near-mimicry of Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan. That album ended up on many an iPod belonging to nostalgic Gen Xers wanting to keep the grunge party going in the wake of the Pumpkins’ messy breakup and millennials who encountered one of Silversun Pickups’ hits — “Lazy Eye” or “Well Thought Out Twinkles” — on MTV or Guitar Hero.

Well, the joke’s on those naysayers, because after more than 20 years, the band’s still going strong, with an upcoming performance at Glenside’s Keswick Theatre on Sunday, Aug. 24., their second in as many years. Having explored more alt-rock and gone through an electro-pop phase, the band decided to embrace its roots by collaborating with their Silver Lake neighbor, legendary grunge-era producer (Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” Smashing Pumpkins’ “Siamese Dream”) and Garbage drummer, Butch Vig for the 2019 album “Widow’s Weeds” and 2022’s “Physical Thrills.”

This latest album offers some surprises (bassist Nikki Monninger’s sweet singing on two songs, for one). But mostly it’s a return to what the band does best: make comfort music for indie rock enthusiasts that sounds good on both earbuds and car stereos, while cleaning a room or in the background at parties, and definitely blasting through amps in a concert hall. Check out young opening band/sister duo Girl Tones for some bonus Riot Grrrl nostalgia.

Silversun Pickups with Girl Tones, Sunday, Aug. 24, at the Keswick Theatre, 291 N. Keswick Ave., Glenside. Doors open 7 p.m. For more information and tickets, call 215-572-7650 or visit keswicktheatre.com.
