As of Friday, SEPTA riders can pay fares with credit cards, debit cards and mobile wallets – making SEPTA the first commuter rail network in the United States to accept contactless payments, according to SEPTA Board Chair Kenneth E. Lawrence Jr.

Passengers can tap physical cards or use their mobile wallets at turnstiles or platform validators.

SEPTA first introduced contactless payment on its transit system in September 2023, generating $31 million in revenue since its launch.

“This technology makes SEPTA more convenient for customers who may not want to plan their trips, purchase a physical Key Card, or use cash to pay their fares – just tap and go,” said SEPTA Interim General Manager Scott A. Sauer, who added that the increased efficiency should help rebuild ridership and support major events coming to Philadelphia in 2026.

The contactless system is not yet available for travel to or from New Jersey stations.
