SCH basketball picks up non-league win

In girls' basketball, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy took a break from tough Inter-Ac League competition last Monday, hosting a non-league contest with Freire Charter High School from center city Philadelphia.

The SCH Blue Devils only trailed the Dragons once, at 2-3 in the second minute, then they recovered to lead 17-9 at the end of the first quarter and continued on to a 49-35 victory.

Freshman forward Zoe Thompson scored a game-high 15 points for Springside Chestnut Hill, which improved to 4-12 overall for the season. Freire slipped back to the .500 mark with the loss, at 10-10.

Thompson scored the Blue Devils' first nine points, powering the hosts to a 9-6 lead six minutes into the game. Later, junior Meghan Flach scored on a drive and added a free throw, and senior Julia Thomson made good on a fast break opportunity.

Zoe Thompson, who'd been working mostly in the paint, stepped back to bag a three-pointer from the top of the key. Freire Charter squeezed in a lay-up at the buzzer to make it 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. Thompson had already scored 12 of her 15 points for the afternoon, and she added a free throw in the second quarter. Senior guard Tatyana Hall put in a three-pointer from the left wing, and at the close of the second round SCH junior center Zahkiyyah Frazier scored in transition and then blocked a shot by the Dragons at the other end. It was 23-17 at the intermission.

Hall also netted the first field goal of the second half, and while the visitors stayed within a few baskets of the Blue Devils in the third quarter, they never were able to make a serious run at the lead. The Devils may not have been in total control of the contest, but one still got the sense that they were in command.

It was 36-28 at the three-quarter mark. Senior Faith Scally had netted a three-pointer during the third frame and she added two more treys in the fourth, so that the Dragons' defense was never sure where the next SCH threat was coming from.

Midway through the final period the Blue Devils had driven the lead up into double figures, 43-29. Scally's last three-pointer made it 46-29 with three-and-a-half minutes left to play, and from there Springside coasted to the 49-35 victory.

Frazier and Scally each scored nine points for the winners and Hall had eight. Guard Destiny Davis and forward Kylah Hargrove led Freire Charter, with 12 and nine points, respectively.
