An ornate, hand-carved hope chest, created by local 20th century artist Harry Louis Stevens, was stolen last week and the artist’s granddaughter, who owns the chest, is hoping someone will recognize it and contact Springfield Township police.
Stevens was a well regarded member of the Arts and Crafts Revivalist movement, said his granddaughter, Jennifer Knox, of Erdenheim. She described the wooden hope chest as full sized and embellished on all sides with writhing angels, leaves and flowers. The carved top is angled on the sides, and flat on top.
