The king of the Hill
The most recommended spot in our poll is Chill on the Hill, the popular frozen yogurt spot on Highland Avenue, just off Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill. At Chill, you get to call the shots, from taste to size to price. You create your own personalized culinary adventure — from choosing the flavor (or combination of flavors) of your frozen yogurt to adding toppings to your heart’s desire from their wide selection. You can create your own unique treat every time you go. You are in charge of your portion size, so you can pop in for a quick snack or relax with a full-blown dessert. And, with their pay-by-weight pricing, you also control your budget. Here’s a sample of our reader reviews.
“Chill on the Hill has the best froyo around! I have froyo places closer to my house, but you bet your bottom dollar I will be going out of my way for some Chill. They have great flavors and are always switching them! Love the atmosphere, it’s a great place to be in.”
— Gia from Ambler
“My favorite place ever is Chill on the Hill! I love the variety of flavors and how clean it is. They have the best service too!”
— Delaney from Chestnut Hill
The titans of homemade ice cream
You know you have some great ice cream options when your neighborhood has two Best of Philly winners. Not surprisingly, our readers weighed in on them too!
Handmade ice cream and creative flavors have made Zsa’s Ice Cream, located at 6616 Germantown Ave. in Mt. Airy, an ice cream icon in the Northwest. A recent change of ownership has not changed that status. The new owner’s pastry chef background may have even upped the game, especially in their specialty menu items.
“When the heat of Philadelphia summer becomes oppressive, there are few remedies as satisfying as the lemon buttermilk ice cream from Zsa’s on Germantown Avenue. Rich, with just the *right* balance of sweetness and tartness, it’s become one of my favorite tastes of summer. Try it as a milkshake flavor if you’re feeling particularly decadent.”
— Will from Mt. Airy
Another homemade shop with locally sourced ingredients is Tubby Robot Ice Cream Factory, located at 4369 Main St. in Manayunk. And Tubby Robot fits the creative, quirky Manayunk vibe. The shop combines an ice cream parlor with a wall of old-school video games to keep the customers entertained and coming back for more.
“Three words. Ice Cream Flights. Why should craft brew drinkers have all the fun? It’s a great way to sample some of their creations like Mexican Chocolate — with cinnamon and cayenne pepper — or a luscious summery peach.”
— Veronica from Manayunk
Summer beverage favorites
A nod goes to High Point Café, with two locations in Mt. Airy. For a summer treat, try High Point at 602 Carpenter Lane, just off the corner of Carpenter and Greene Lane, or their second location at the Allens Lane train station.
“I love the Summer Iced Tea at High Point Cafe!”
— Sarah from Mt. Airy
For the crowd that likes a little kick to their summer beverage, a recommendation goes to McNally’s Tavern at 8634 Germantown Ave. in Chestnut Hill.
“Nothing says summer is here like adult slushies at McNally’s! Combine it with a lobster roll and….mmm…chef’s kiss!”
— Leigh from Springfield Twp.
