It was so special for me to turn the Local page and see that fabulous obituary you wrote about Tom Walsh (March 26). In this small town, Tom was my daughter’s uncle-in-law, and besides on the Avenue, I got to see Tom at all their family events. After I worked so hard to expose Freddie and Jane to lots of diversity, both of them married Irish Catholics. Go figure. I learned so much from Tom and am so glad I saw as much of him as I did. I used to love riding down the Avenue, seeing Tom ahead, and rolling down my car window and yelling “Yo, Tom.” I knew it would make him grin. Maybe most, though, was that he lived longer than most with Down Syndrome were ever expected and that I got to see how special the Walshes were to have cared for and loved Tom so much and forever.

Your tribute to Tom was perfect. The minute I saw it, I knew that wherever Tom is now, he grinned with pride and I could yell one more time, “Yo, Tom.” So thank you so much. It made more than my day!
