New Juneteenth mural unveiled in Germantown

A new 1,100-square-foot mural was unveiled Saturday outside Germantown ArtHaus, an arts and education center founded by Keisha Whatley in the 6200 block of Germantown Avenue. The mural is Philadelphia’s first to commemorate Juneteenth - June 19, 1865 - when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were notified of their freedom, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Whatley served as the project’s lead muralist.
