The 2025 holiday season presents the opportunity to give a truly unduplicated gift. How, you ask, could one avoid the dreaded I-already-have-one-of-these regifting scenarios? The answer lies in the convergence of a time in history that will never be repeated, two popular gifting trends, and your creativity in designing a personalized gift.

The start of the semiquincentennial, or celebration of America’s 250th birthday, is just weeks away. And Philadelphia is the epicenter of the party. How lucky are we to be in this place at this time? Weaving this historic event into a holiday gift will create a unique present.

Some people will want to sit back, let the visitors descend upon the city and opt to be observers of the events that will be happening in our backyard. Others will want to jump right in, participate and create memories that last forever. Whichever strategy your gift recipient is likely to deploy, you can still design an experience that will create that once-in-a-lifetime connection to this historic time.

Two holiday buying trends that lend themselves perfectly to creating a memory-making “America250” gift are image-signaling products and experiential gifting. Choosing the right tactile gift and experience will tailor your gift specifically to the interests of the recipient.

Step one: Philly Pride

Image signaling, or self-branding, has been a trend forever. Whether it was the little LaCoste alligator or gear from your college or favorite sports team, people have been wearing clues to their identity or personality for decades. Recently that trend has drilled down to specifically where you live; town and even zip code-branded products are everywhere.

Let’s face it, Philly has been a hot brand for a while. Visitors will come and buy their trinkets and tchotchkes, but as Philadelphians, we will need to embrace our roots and represent in 2026. Decking out in Philly gear is certainly the best way to show your Philadelphia roots. But Philly branding doesn’t end with clothing.

You can find neighborhood and Philly-branded items in most shops along Germantown Avenue. From clothing to ornaments to maps, mugs or custom-embroidered items, it would be hard to end a visit to a local shop without seeing at least one Philly-branded item (although I have yet to find a Philly philodendron).

Two shops that stand out as mega-Philly gift outposts are the Serendipity Shops of Chestnut Hill (8506 Germantown Ave.) and Occasionette (8521 Germantown Ave.). Serendipity is your spot for clothing – hats, shirts, socks, even onesies for the baby – but they also carry a wide variety of other Philly and Chestnut Hill-branded items. Occasionette’s inventory is more home and entertainment focused. Art prints, blankets, kitchen items, even puzzles and playing cards, are among the Philly offerings.

Step two: Choosing the experience

One of the best things about an experiential gift is that it not only provides entertainment, but can also create lasting memories. Combining your Philly gift with an experience that is connected to a 2026 semiquincentennial event is key to creating a special “250” gift.

There are a host of large-scale events to choose from. Tickets to the NCAA basketball tournament in March. Passes for the PGA Championship at Aronimink in May. Tickets to a World Cup game in June. Tickets to the MLB All-Star game or All-Star week festivities in July. Admittedly, these could be tough tickets to land. Visit Philadelphia has compiled a list of dozens of events that could fit the bill as the perfect experience for your gift, visitphilly.com/2026-philadelphia.

Starting in January, the city will be hosting 52 Weeks of Firsts, a celebration of firsts that started in Philadelphia. The “Saturday First-ivals” will be events held in various neighborhoods throughout the city, each one spotlighting a different first. While most of the events will be held in Center City, three will be held in Northwest neighborhoods. Admission to these events is free, so plan to join a friend or family member and make it a shared experience. Investigate the list of firsts at visitphilly.com/52-weeks-of-firsts.

Let your imagination guide you in creating your ideal “250” gift and create the perfect immersive and memorable experience this year.
