Caroline Myran of Chestnut Hill, a senior at Germantown Friends School, was honored as a 2013 Markward Award Winner by the William H. Markward Memorial Basketball Club on December 11.
Phil Martelli, head basketball coach at St. Joseph’s University, was the keynote speaker at the Markward luncheon. Coach Martelli talked about the importance of being a good teammate, above all else.
GFS Athletic Director Katie Bergstrom Mark noted it was fitting that teamwork was the theme of Martelli's talk. Myran is a three-sport varsity athlete (12 season varsity letter-winner), captain of soccer, basketball and lacrosse, and she "epitomizes what it means to be a good teammate, as her teammates will attest."
Bergstrom Mark added, "She is an all-around exceptional student in the classroom and is a steward of our community. We are proud to have Caroline represent GFS for this award. She spoke beautifully about her love for basketball and the city of Philadelphia."
Germantown Friends has had several players honored by the club over the years. Notably, Myran is only the third female player to be a Markward recipient from GFS. Her older brother, Gilman, also won the Markward Award when he played at Germantown Friends.
