The state Department of Community and Economic Development came through with a final $1.8 million that Mt. Airy needs to get started on its traffic calming and pedestrian crossing project last week, clearing the way for work to begin later this year.

“That is the rest of what we need to move forward with our project and break ground later this year,” said Ken Weinstein, one of the largest developers in Mt. Airy and Germantown and board chairman of the Mt. Airy Business Improvement District. “We are overwhelmed with excitement!”

Mt. Airy’s long-awaited sidewalk improvement project will cost $3.5 million and is being funded by a mix of federal, state and city grants.

The project, proposed many years ago by the Mt. Airy BID, will enhance pedestrian safety at seven key intersections. It will also complete the pedestrian street lighting for the 6400 block of Germantown Avenue, which was left out of improvements done decades ago.

Mt. Airy’s 1.8-mile stretch of Germantown Avenue, which spans the corridor from Cresheim Valley Drive to Washington Lane, has long been challenging for pedestrians due to fast-moving traffic and infrequent crosswalks.
