The United Lutheran Seminary’s Mt. Airy campus will celebrate the school’s 44th annual “Preaching with Power” series March 15-18 at locations mostly in Northwest Philadelphia, with one scheduled in the Eastwick section of the city.

The event celebrates African American preaching and is hosted by the seminary’s Urban Theological Institute, which focuses on providing theological education to church leaders that is “relevant and upbuilding” for the African American community.

Mt. Airy seminary hosts ‘Preaching with Power’ series

The United Lutheran Seminary’s Mt. Airy campus will celebrate the school’s 44th annual “Preaching with Power” series March 15-18 at locations mostly in Northwest Philadelphia, with one scheduled in the Eastwick section of the city.

The event celebrates African American preaching and is hosted by the seminary’s Urban Theological Institute, which focuses on providing theological education to church leaders that is “relevant and upbuilding” for the African American community.

This year, featured speakers include Bishop Yehiel Curry, leader of the national Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the first African American elected to the post. Curry will deliver a sermon at 7 p.m., March 17 at Reformation Lutheran Church, 1215 Vernon Rd.

Bishop J. Louis Felton, senior pastor of Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ in West Oak Lane, will speak at 6 p.m., March 15 at the seminary’s chapel at 7301 Germantown Ave.

The Rev. Dr. Derick Brennan, senior pastor of Canaan Baptist Church in Germantown, is scheduled for 7 p.m., March 16, at Grace Baptist Church of Germantown, 25 W. Johnson St.

Dr. Marquisha Lawrence Scott, an associate professor in the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Denver and a University of Pennsylvania graduate, will deliver a lecture in the seminary’s Brossman Center at 11:45 a.m., March 17.

The Rev. Dr. Leslie Callahan, the first woman to be called as pastor to St. Paul’s Baptist Church in the Poplar section of Philadelphia, will deliver a sermon at 11:45 a.m., March 18, in the seminary’s chapel. Later that day, the Rev. Dr. Janet Sturdivant, presiding elder of the South District of the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, will preach at 7 p.m. at St. Paul Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, 8398 Lindbergh Blvd. in Southwest Philadelphia.
