Mt. Airy Day celebrates spring, and community

The annual Mt. Airy Day street festival is scheduled for Saturday, May 11, and organizers are inviting residents to “embrace the spirit of community” in an event that will include music, family activities, food and fun.

This year, the festival is spearheaded by East Mt. Airy Neighbors and will include more than 100 vendors along the event location on Germantown Avenue, between Mt. Pleasant Avenue and East Gorgas Lane. Mt. Airy Day is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., with a rain date of Saturday, May 18.

For the young ones, there's a special craft activity where they can make a Mother’s Day card, along with games, prizes, and a bounce house.  Vendors will be on hand to share community information and resources. Keep an eye out for a mystery city mascot who's scheduled to make a special appearance, adding to the fun and excitement of the day.

DJ Big Cuz, Pinkk Lee, Young Granny, and Elle Gyandoh & The John Doe Band will provide entertainment. They’ll be joined on stage by 4VR, Gloom East, Expressions of Soul, and Gorgeous Porch. Boogieman Dela, an artist at the forefront of Philadelphia’s soul and hip-hop scene, will host the entertainment stage.

The festival, which started over 50 years ago, was founded as a way to bring together neighbors on either side of Germantown Avenue who were concerned about the blight along the community’s major thoroughfare, but often didn’t venture across the commercial corridor to share their concerns and ideas. Organizers developed the street festival to foster a sense of community and the first Mt. Airy Day was at the Sedgwick Playground and the area surrounding it.

Mt. Airy Day 2024 is a city-sponsored activity facilitated by Councilmember Cindy Bass. Other sponsors include PGW, 98.5 Uptown Radio, The Frosted Fox bakery, and the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union.
