Taking a break from their demanding league schedules, the field hockey teams from neighbors Mount St. Joseph and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy came together for a spirited non-league match at SCH on Sept. 29. SCH took the early lead and the Magic went up by two goals later on. The host Blue Devils scored once in the fourth quarter to produce a 3-2 outcome favoring the visiting Mounties.
The Mount improved to 9-2 overall while remaining 3-1 within the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies, while SCH came away 3-4-1 overall and stayed at 2-2 in the Inter-Ac League. Each squad had …

The Mount improved to 9-2 overall while remaining 3-1 within the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies, while SCH came away 3-4-1 overall and stayed at 2-2 in the Inter-Ac League. Each squad had lost a league game in its previous outing, the Magic getting edged out, 4-3, by traditional rival Villa Maria Academy, while SCH succumbed, 9-0, to the top-ranked team in the nation, the Academy of Notre Dame.
For Springside Chestnut Hill, the Sept. 29 game was a “Dream Crazy” event helping honor the memory of Gretta Ehret, the sister of Blue Devils head coach Emilee Ehret Mahon. Gretta, a former Division I college hockey player who went on to become a highly successful coach, died in July 2025 from metastatic breast cancer.
Mahon has now expanded the mission of Dream Crazy beyond breast cancer awareness and research funding.
“Around August of last year,” Mahon said, “we started to hold free sports camps and clinics for underserved kids, and we also give out scholarships.”
She added, “Both Gretta and I were extremely impacted by our time in Teach For America, where we taught in underserved, low-income communities.”
Mahon’s organization holds events several times a month, and they’ve incorporated equipment drives which can provide participants with sports gear they might not be able to afford. Complementing Mahon’s field hockey clinics, a soccer component is headed up by Gretta Ehret’s brother-in- law, former collegiate and professional soccer player Joe Farrell.
“Gretta was always so enthusiastic about being a coach and a teacher, and that’s how she would want her legacy to be remembered,” Mahon said.
The organization’s website is dreamcrazyforgretta.org.
Talking about her SCH team’s season so far, Mahon observed, “We’re in the middle bubble trying to break toward the top.”
So far, four SCH seniors have committed to play field hockey in college: Amelia Clements (Drexel), Sydney Jacoby (Sacred Heart), Molly McGinn (Old Dominion) and Reese Westerman (U. Cal. Davis).
Mount St. Joseph was first to press the attack in last week’s game, but the Blue Devils held on defense and then pushed up on offense. Nobody got on the scoreboard until the first-quarter clock was down to two minutes and 10 seconds, which is when senior Talia Stowe gave host SCH the early lead off an assist from junior Penny Boyle.
The Magic evened things up a little over five minutes into the second period. Senior Tess Hankins shot from about six yards outside of the left post, and although an SCH back had a chance to block the shot near the goal line, the ball continued into the cage. For much of the afternoon, the play ranged up and down the field, with both teams generating a number of scoring opportunities.
Four saves were recorded for each team’s goalkeeper: senior Kathryn Pedicino for the Mount and sophomore Maya Taglieber for the Blue Devils.
Early in the second half, Taglieber made a nice glove save on a high shot from near the left post by MSJ senior Caitlin Paul. However, the Magic were able to take a 2-1 lead with 10:43 remaining in the third period. Senior Julia McGlynn hit the ball toward the Devils’ cage and Hankins got the tip-in for her second goal of the day.
McGlynn earned another assist with just under six minutes elapsed in the fourth quarter. She centered the ball from outside of the left post and junior Cece Freimuth scored the goal to put the Magic up 3-1.
SCH earned two penalty corners later on. The Blue Devils didn’t get off a shot on the first one, and on the second one Mount keeper Pedicino made a kick save. With five minutes remaining in the game, a ball hit by freshman Isabelle Bland found its way over to Clements in the right side of the circle. Clements crushed a beautiful backhander that cracked into the backboard to make it a one-goal game.
Following a timeout called by Mount St. Joseph, the visitors returned to the field focused on defending their slim lead. They survived several late assaults by SCH, and with under a minute to go, a Blue Devils corner led to a shot that was blocked by the Magic’s Paul. After that, it wasn’t long before the clock ran out on Springside Chestnut Hill.
