Joseph M. "Joe" Ascenzi, 71, of Abington, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29th. from Parkinson’s Disease.

Joe was born in Philadelphia and raised in Ardsley, PA.  He graduated from Germantown Academy, attended Temple University, ultimately earning his Bachelor’s degree from Penn State University. Joe spent several years working in various aspects of horticulture preparing for his true calling. In the early 1980’s, Joe opened his own business, Laurel Hill Gardens in Chestnut Hill, where for over 40 years he served the community with dedication and care until his retirement in 2025. He took great joy in designing and building unique gardens and enhancing landscapes. He was beloved by his family, friends, customers, and associates alike. Joe was also instrumental in creating and managing the landscaped grounds at St. Joseph's Villa, a place that would later care for him in his final days.

Always willing to help, Joe often donated his skills to groups like Abington Township Shade Committee, Chestnut Hill Business Association, Morris Arboretum, the Philadelphia Zoo, the Philadelphia Flower Show, and too many others to mention, including Christmas trees donated to those in need.

Beyond the garden, Joe had a love of music, cars, and his beloved pets, most recently Woodrow & Selma,  He could often be found listening to Frank Sinatra, The Rat Pack, the Beatles, and an occasional opera.  These sounds were always on in his house, truck, or car, except when his beloved Phillies were playing.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Jennifer Donohue; his parents, Catherine and John Ascenzi; and his oldest brother, Charles.

He is survived by his siblings, Larry Ascenzi (Christine), Anne Marie Wilson (Peter), and sister-in law Joanne.  Along with nieces, Lauren (Matt) and Alyssa (Joe) (Enzo, Emilia), nephews, John, Mark (Linnette) (Baylor), Alexander (Catherine) (Anthony), and Eric,

Joe will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His willingness to give to others and his kindness always made one appreciate the time you spent with Joe.

According to his wishes, Joe’s requested Celebration of Life will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe's memory to St. Joseph's Villa, Flourtown, PA or the Abington Township Shade Tree Commission. Joe would also be appreciative to anyone planting a tree in his memory.
