Inspiring Change by Planting Trees

Tree Tender’s Mindy Maslin honored for her work

The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education is honoring Mindy Maslin, founder and director of the Tree Tenders program at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society with the Henry Meigs Environmental Leadership Award on Thursday, November 18 at 7 p.m.

This honor will be awarded in an online discussion about Philadelphia’s tree canopy coverage (the area of land shaded by trees) and about working with local communities to plant trees that ultimately enhance the health and well-being of our neighborhoods. Panelists will include Tree Tenders Sharrieff Ali and Gabriella Paez, and TreePhilly’s Jack Braunstein.

For almost 30 years, Mindy has trained 5,600 volunteers in tree planting while helping plant at least 20,000 trees across the city and beyond. In an effort to mitigate climate change and address environmental justice, Philadelphia has ambitious plans to plant thousands of trees. Learn about the City’s plan in conversation with a panel of experts including Tree Tenders Mindy Maslin, Sharrieff Ali, Gabriella Paez, and TreePhilly’s Jack Braunstein.

The Henry Meigs Environmental Leadership Award was established in 2006 to honor environmental leaders who leave a meaningful and lasting impact on their community and the Philadelphia region, and who embody the qualities of leadership, integrity, and vision. Executive Director Mike Weilbacher is “so happy to honor Mindy, as few people have planted more trees in the region than she has, and tree planting is such a powerful act.”

Named for one of the Center’s founders and its longest-serving trustee, previous Meigs honorees include former governor Ed Rendell, artist Stacy Levy, and environmental center founder Jerome Shabazz.
