This event promises to take audiences on a musical journey through the evolution of American roots music, blues, and jazz, starting from the 1920s to the turn of the century.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Historic Germantown courtyard at 5501 Germantown Ave., the series will feature six concerts. Each show is an educational experience of the rich tapestry of American musical history.
The lineup includes nationally and internationally recognized artists like Roy Book Binder, Saul Broudy, Odean Pope, Bobby Zankel, Gloria Galante, Jim Dragoni, Rhenda Fearrington and Paul Woznicki. These artists were selected for their extensive historical knowledge and significant contributions to the chronology of musical history.
Tickets are $25 per show when purchased in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets are available at Historic Germantown's website. All shows start at 4 p.m.
The upcoming 2024 concert series dates are:
May 11: Roy Book Binder. Acoustic blues and stories of Roy’s travels with Rev Gary Davis, Pink Anderson, and New York Folk-era luminaries.
June 8: Saul Broudy. Songs of the Dust Bowl, Woody Guthrie and Beyond
July 13: Odean Pope Quartet. Original Arrangements and an Oral History of the John Coltrane era of Philadelphia Jazz
August 10: Bobby Zankel and the Wonderful Sound Six. Philadelphia History with "A Change of Destiny," Zankel’s Music Examines the Lives of Slaves Kept by George Washington at the President's House in Philadelphia.
September 14: Fearrington, Galante, Dragoni. Songs and stories from the road by vocalist Rhenda Fearrington, harpist Gloria Galante and guitarist Jim Dragoni. Stories and performances from the combined experiences of playing with Roberta Flack, Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross, Mose Allison and other icons.
October 12: Paul Woznicki. Modern Music for Keyboards, Synthesizers and more. Cosmic Ambience Jazz and Blues, Rooted in the Past and Future
Historic Germantown, a collective of 19 historic houses, destinations and museums in Northwest Philadelphia, is dedicated to preserving and sharing Philadelphia's rich historical heritage. "Music Alive" is not just an event but a celebration of this heritage through the universal language of music.
