Michael Allman, son of the late Gregg Allman, a founding member of the legendary rock band The Allman Brothers Band, is set to pay tribute to his family's long and illustrious musical legacy at the Chestnut Hill Garden Festival's Outdoor After Party & Concert on Sunday, May 19. The performance, originally scheduled for May 5, was postponed due to inclement weather, which also caused the festival to be rescheduled.
Allman, known for a bluesy, soulful voice that evokes his father in his prime, will perform at the Venetian Social Club of Chestnut Hill, located at 8030 Germantown Ave. Gates open at 4 p.m., and tickets are $20 at the gate. Local rockers Bloomer will open the show.
"It took a lot to reschedule," said promoter Bob Nolen. "But the band is really excited to come out."
He will perform classic Allman Brothers hits such as "Whipping Post," "Blue Sky," and "Midnight Rider," as well as his own solo tracks, including "It Ain't Me," "If Dreams Were Money," "Laid Back," and "Mule Named Whiskey." He will be backed by Philadelphia's own Mile High Club band, featuring John McNutt (guitar), Marc Iezzi (drums), A.J. Hager (bass), Bob Nolen (percussion), Tim Smith (guitarist), and Tim McKinstry (keyboard).
Born on July 27, 1966, Michael has followed in his father's footsteps, pursuing a career in music as a singer and songwriter. Much like his father's work, Michael’s music is rooted in rock, blues, and country. His vocals often draw comparisons to Gregg Allman's distinctive voice, and his songs explore themes of love, loss, and personal struggle.
Throughout his career, Michael has released several albums, both as a solo artist and with his band. Some of his notable releases include "Hard Labor Creek" (2010), "Michael Allman Band Live" (2012), and "A Night with Gregg Allman & Friends" (2015), which features live recordings of Michael performing alongside his father.
Allman has released two studio albums, "Hard Labor Creek" (2009) and "Blues Travels Fast" (2020), both praised for their driving Southern rock sound and bluesy undertones. Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with notable artists such as Devon Allman, Artimus Pyle, Georgia Satellites, and Paula Nelson.
The Chestnut Hill Home & Garden Festival, presented by the Chestnut Hill Business District (CHBD), will take over Germantown Ave. from Rex to Willow Grove Avenues from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 200 vendors will showcase home improvements, plants, tools, and garden accessories, while the Makers Village on the 8000 block of Germantown Avenue will feature artisans demonstrating their skills in pottery, macrame, sewing, and stained glass.
Festival events
Stagecrafters Theater, at 8130 Germantown Ave., is presenting circus-themed and theatrical performances including a Jenks Choir rendition of music from “Aladdin” from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
SNAP Co. dance performances will be at noon and 12:30 p.m.
The Amazing Carson will do Tarot card readings from 1 to 3 p.m.
And the story of “Rumpelstiltskin” will be performed by Children’s Theater with shows at 1, 2, and 3 p.m.
Several venues will host live music.
Visit Buckley Park Stage (Germantown Avenue and Hartwell Lane) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to hear DJ Esteban.
Bethlehem Stage (Germantown Avenue and Bethlehem Pike) is hosting the Dukes of Destiny from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Red X from 2 to 5 p.m.
At the Venetian Club (8000 Germantown Ave.), you’ll find Second Story Walkup from 3 to 5 p.m. as well as a post-festival performance by the Michael Allman Band.
Finally, Carty Brown is scheduled to perform outside the Starbucks, at 8515 Germantown Ave., at a soon-to-be-announced time.

A Chestnut Hill institution, McNally’s Tavern (8634 Germantown Ave.), will host an outdoor cookout. In addition to cooking up tasty sandwiches like the famous Schmitter, McNally's will offer beer and spring-inspired slushies.
Tavern on the Hill (8636 Germantown Ave.) will be hosting Hilltop Books, the bookstore of the Friends of the Chestnut Hill Library. Used books will be available for purchase.
