The Chestnut Hill Community Association has partnered with the Chestnut Hill Business District this summer to host a fun “Design Your Own Flag Contest” for America’s 250th anniversary. Local businesses are currently displaying the winning flags in their windows for the community to view until July 10.
The contest allowed participants to submit flags for three categories; Garden District; Community & Culture; and Red, White, Blue & You. These categories consisted of four different age groups: 7 and under, 8-14, 15-19, and 20 and over. With 13 total submissions, the winners were selected based on creativity and their connection to the theme.
“I think it’s a really good example of the uniqueness of the community in Chestnut Hill,” said CHCA Executive Director Anne McNiff. “...It’s a way for people to participate in a shared activity, it’s fun and creative, and also, it ties into the celebration of Philadelphia and the whole country.”
In the 7-and-under age group, the first-place winner for Garden District is Benjamin Brown. The first- and second-place winners for Community & Culture are Jeremiah Leslie and Eleanor Brown. The first-, second- and third-place winners for Red, White, Blue & You are Mayasaa Nichols, Noa Piotrowski and Ian Cespedes.
In the 8-14 age group, the first- and second-place winners for Garden District are Stella Fell and Kynedi Hartwell. The first-place winners for Community & Culture are Sage and Thomas Kikuchi. The first- and second-place winners for Red, White, Blue & You are Haven Templeton and Penny Foley.
Finally, with no submissions from the 15-19 category, in the 20-and-over category, the first-place winner for Garden District is Ella Steen and the first-place winner for Community & Culture is Maria Vecchiolli.
“There are going to be activities all summer long to engage the community in the celebration,” McNiff said. “But this was sort of a kickoff that we could do that would involve the arts, children and creativity.”
McNiff said that while this event is a one-time thing specifically tied into America’s 250th celebration, there are many more exciting events ahead.
