In response to President Trump’s recent takeover of the Washington, D.C. police force despite the objections of the district’s mayor, State Sen. Art Haywood (D-4) announced plans to introduce legislation shielding Pennsylvania police departments from similar federal overreach.
President Trump has pledged to take control of police operations in other municipalities. Haywood’s legislation will establish protections against any federal attempt to seize control of Pennsylvania law enforcement agencies without state or local consent. The bill will affirm the commonwealth’s commitment to community-led policing and local accountability.
“The importance of allowing for local control of our law enforcement agencies cannot be overstated,” Haywood said. “When law enforcement is rooted in the community, they protect the safety and dignity of us and our neighbors. We cannot allow our dignity to be subject to the criminal president’s agenda.”
Haywood plans to introduce this legislation in the coming weeks.
Art Haywood can be reached at his district offices at 1168 Easton Rd., Abington (215-517-1434) and 7106 Germantown Ave, Mt. Airy (215-242-8171), or by email at SenatorHaywood@pasenate.com.
