The boys squash team at Germantown Friends put on impressive performances last week, easily dispatching its two (geographically) closest rivals. After taking down Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, the GFS Tigers visited Penn Charter on Thursday, where they recorded their second straight 9-0 victory.
Only one of the individual matches at PC extended beyond the three-game minimum. This occurred in the ninth flight, where Quakers junior William Kaiser opened with an 11-4 win and then saw GFS sophomore Alexander Duggan take the next three games, 11-4, 11-6, 11-8.
Tigers seniors playing in the seventh and eighth spots won in straight games, with number seven Jackson Rodgers logging scores of 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 against Charter junior Grayson Rupp, while George Davis-Diver won the eighth match, 11-5, 14-12, 11-2, over another PC 11th-grader, Nolan Duffy.
An already potent Germantown Friends line-up has benefitted from a new arrival that has allowed all of the returning players to compete one rung down the team ladder. The new number one for the Tigers is Timo Radionov, who hails from Kiev in wartorn Ukraine. Already a presence on the international junior circuit, Radionov is living with a host family in this area while attending GFS as a senior this year.
Against another 12th-grader, Penn Charter's Marko Vucetic, Radionov won 11-4, 11-2, 11-6 last Thursday.
The Tigers had five juniors playing in the second through sixth flights.
At number two, Izzy Torchinsky-Field was an 11-4, 11-4, 11-3 winner against Grant Roshkoff, while another Quakers senior, Griffin Yeatman, fell to visitor Charlie Raven, 11-3, 11-6, 11-7. Germantown number four Oliver Pride overcame the youngest player on the courts, PC eighth-grader James Killinger, by scores of 11-2, 11-2, 11-3.
Number five Jasper Furnas and number six Walter Savage each faced fellow juniors, with Furnas defeating Andrew Tanner, 11-6, 11-1, 11-0, and Savage subduing Dean Kaiser, 11-6, 11-3, 14-12.
The Tigers will close out their December schedule by hosting powerful Episcopal Academy this week, while Penn Charter (1-2 overall) plays its first Inter-Ac League match at Malvern Prep.
