Freedom, festivities and fun: A guide to Juneteenth

Since 2006, the Johnson House Historic Site has hosted an annual Juneteenth celebration of Black culture, heritage, ancestry and liberation.  This year, the event is June 14, noon-7 p.m., on the 6300 block of Germantown Ave. 

Hosts Michelle Snow and Jeff Hart will oversee the seven-hour celebration, showcasing a variety of performances from local artists and musical talents. From brassy renditions to soul, R&B and beyond, the expected performers include Trumpet Chics, Philly Destiny Band, Generational Uprising, Voices of Philadelphia, and Hines Creative Arts. The celebration is free so bring yourself or your whole block to this jam-packed day of food, fun, activities, and art.

The fight goes on: Voices that resonate

On June 14, the Grounded Theater Company will perform dramatic readings of four speeches about racial equality and civil rights by playwright Lorraine Hansberry, Baptist preacher Joseph Jackson, activist Angela Davis and Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. There will be 30-minute performances at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Readings are at the Upper Burying Ground, 6309 Germantown Ave. Admission is free. 

Make it Monday

Andorra Library will host its free annual Juneteenth event from 3-6 p.m., June 16.  Participants can engage in arts and crafts projects, including creating a Pan-African flag. All supplies are provided. The library is at 705 E. Cathedral Rd.

Woodmere

Woodmere art museum hosts a celebration honoring Juneteenth, June 19, 3-4:30 p.m., at its outdoor classroom. The event will showcase performances from the DIAMONDS Step Team of J.S. Jenks Academy of Art and Sciences. Attendees can pay homage to the emancipation of enslaved African Americans through “songs of freedom” and movements of liberation.  Registration is free and not required but a link to register is available on Woodmere’s website. Refreshments will be provided. Woodmere is at 9201 Germantown Ave.

Jabali Market jubilee fest

The Jabali Market celebration will include live performances, food and refreshments, vendors from local businesses, art, history and storytelling, June 21, starting at 11 a.m. An interactive workshop on planting microgreens with local gardener Erykah Johnson (DivaErykah) begins at 11:30 a.m. At noon, percussionist Karen Smith will showcase rhythmic drum pieces followed by a free baby diaper giveaway sponsored by infant and maternal care service Baby B Soothed, dance pieces from award-winning dance company Worldwide Unique Star Dance Studio, open mic poetry showcases, and line dance lessons led by Charles L Mont III (Dancing with Charlie). The festival is at  Maplewood Mall, Greene  and Armat Streets in Germantown.

Juneteenth Extravaganza at Oxford Presbyterian Church

On June 14, from 5-8 p.m., Oxford Presbyterian Church, 8501 Stenton Ave., will host their Juneteenth Extravaganza, with dinner and live music. The talents of classic soul band Philly Reminisce, jazz musician Marion Salaam, vocalists Pamela Renee Smith, and Lisa Chavous, will be showcased. Tickets are $30, and can be purchased by calling 215-247-9487. 

Mural arts printmaking art ventures

Join Mt. Airy Art Garage Printmaking by the People project on Thursday, June 19, for their Juneteenth Art’Ventures Event. The project commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Led by artist Justin Keller, participants will study printmaking, political posters and strategic messaging through posters. The event will offer lectures about political posters, printmaking, and strategic messaging alongside poster-making workshops. Mt. Airy Art Garage is at 7054 Germantown Ave.
