Eileen Rose Shupak, 79, passed peacefully in the presence of her family. Born in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of Nettie V. Evans and Patrick M. O'Boyle. She was the widow of Joel {Harris} Shupak, and a Chestnut Hill resident for over 30 years.
Eileen came to Philadelphia in 1965 to study laboratory science. She was a research assistant at University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon furthering her education to become an EEG technician, she was a supervisor of that department at Philadelphia Children's Hospital for a decade. She then managed that department at Chestnut Hill Hospital, and the Vascular Studies Department, until her retirement.
Prior to her professional career choices, Eileen worked for the Distant Drummer, a local underground newspaper in the 1960s. She was politically and socially immersed in the counterculture of that generation. Throughout her lifetime she challenged societal norms, and exemplified principled causes.
Never forgetting her childhood experiences in the forests of Northeastern PA, she had an immense appreciation for wildlife, especially birds. An early proponent of conservation, she contributed to preserving our natural environment.
As a devotee of mystical experiences, she was immersed in the curiosities and synchronicities of everyday life. A member of the Edgar Cayce Society, she traveled to Virginia Beach to explore his archives there.
As a long-time Chestnut Hill resident, she was a familiar presence on the Avenue. Her family tradition was to always befriend a stranger, so she easily reached out to all with a smile, and a witty exchange. Carrying a pocket of dog treats, she surprised local canines on her walks. They too, sadly, will also lament her absence.
Eileen is survived by her son, Elie Aiden Shupak. and her grandson Sachiel H. Rose-Shupak, Philadelphians. A sister Kathleen A O'Boyle and husband Ray A Dickinson of Factoryville PA. Also, nieces and nephews and many true friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Please Pray for Peace!
