It happens every year. The Christmas tree is gone. The wreaths and centerpieces are tossed. The garlands and candles are packed away. And all of a sudden, your home appears barren. With the long winter months ahead, there always seems to be a challenge in keeping that warm holiday glow, minus the holidays. 

So, here are a few tips and tricks that will bridge winter into spring and give back the sparkle through the chilly months ahead.

Window treatments have been scaled back dramatically over the past several years. I suggest adding another layer. Balloon shades, while not popular for a while, can add super interest beneath boring panels and provide extra warmth physically and visually. You can either match the color of the panels or choose a complementary shade and pattern. And don’t think they are too frilly. A “tailored” balloon is just the ticket.

Wallpaper is making a comeback. There is no better way to add pizzazz to a space than by installing an interesting wallcovering. A stylized floral combines modern flair with a hint of tradition. But if you don’t like patterns, opt for grasscloth or linen, which will add that all-important textural element to any room.

Since floral bouquets are both scarce and expensive this time of year, opt for miniature fruit trees to highlight a tabletop or windowsill. Surround the tree with bud vases of white blooms suggesting a snowfall.

Add decorative cushions to wooden chairs and fasten them with colorful tassels. Have some new throw pillows made using the same fabric as the new balloon shades, and trim them with decorative cord or trim.

Candlestick lamps are the perfect addition to tabletops or kitchen counters, adding that all-important ambient light. Top them with uniquely shaped shades, which can also add a new layer to exposed chandelier bulbs.

Speaking of layering...think about adding a new carpet to an otherwise exposed floor. A small area carpet immediately changes a room’s perspective. If you already have wall-to-wall carpet, add a patterned rug on top. This will add more warmth to the room as well as serve to outline a seating arrangement.

When entertaining, add a beautiful linen topper to an existing tablecloth, which gives your table a "finished" look. If you are stumped as to where to find a "linen topper," try your mother's or grandmother's dining room buffet drawer. It can be a treasure trove of beautiful linens people don’t think to use anymore.

Spring isn’t too far away, but in the meantime, experiment with different fabrics, patterns, and colors that will create decorative combinations, adding interest, and warmth, and replacing a room devoid of holiday décor with one that is just as warm and inviting.
