There are always a limited number of entries for the first Manny Flick/Horvat regatta of the spring rowing season, and last Sunday's weather led to even slimmer pickings than usual. Cold temperatures and blustery winds caused some schools to drop out altogether, but Germantown Academy, Germantown Friends, Mount St. Joseph Academy, Penn Charter, and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy all showed up to race.
As expected, Mount St. Joseph eights excelled. The Magic entered two boats in the varsity category. The Mount's actual varsity eight (cox - Chloe Van de Meulebroecke, stroke - Kelly Cleary, Aoife Meacle, Caroline Johnson, Grace Hartzell, Clara Pagano, Nina Rowello, Vanessa Ksiazek, Ellie Fazio) easily won the first heat and posted the fastest time overall, while what is actually the Magic's second eight (cox- Angelina Baker, stroke - Anna Ledwith, Alexa Konowal, Kari Prosperi, Meghan Krumenacher, Alexa Kennedy, Norah McGlynn, Alexia Levine, Molly Maher) won the second heat with the second-best time.
Germantown Friends fared very well in a number of smaller vessels. Tiger scullers won their races and recorded the top times in both the boys' JV single (Joshua Cappiello) and girls' JV double (Lila Donovan, Lucy Yanella). In the girls' JV double, Penn Charter's Zoe Page and Grace Magee won the second heat.
Next, in the boys' JV double, the two GFS entries each won their heats. Neelmani Robinson and Leonard Katowitz went first, and in the second heat Shachar Pinto and Anand Rajagopalan turned in the top time in the category.
In three heats of the girls' JV quad, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (Emma Ludwikowski, Maeve O'Connor, Nadia Stockman, Cecelia Stevenson) won the first race. Germantown Friends' "A" boat (Cara Appleberry, Rebecca Rasmussen, Natalie Lau, Leah Cornejo) won the third heat, just one second off the top time established by Agnes Irwin in the second section.
In boys' doubles competition, SCH saw its lightweights (Elias Eckert, Matthew Leon-Palfrey) take first place over Inter-Ac League rival Haverford School, while the JV tandem (Andrew Saunders, Keith Angell) came in second in the second heat of that event.
Mount St. Joe fans saw Catholic Academies rival Merion Mercy win both flights in the varsity four, but at least the Magic placed second each time. One vessel contained Sarah Mark (cox), Michaela Kowalski (stroke), Anna Fedders, Molly Chipman, and Maddy Winn, while the other boat was staffed by Kylie Reichert (cox), Julia Fede, Maggie Mullaney, Maddie Kristel, and Emily Feilke.
Just before that, Penn Charter swept the boys' and girls' varsity double events. First, Ella Bretschneider and Ellie Choate registered the fastest time out of the two girls' races, and then in a rare six-boat heat in this first Flick, the Quakers' James Glomb and Scott Sweeney led the field to the finish line.
Second in this race was the Germantown Academy duo of Haiden Bonczek and Max Goldman, whose performance here gave the Patriots their best outcome of the day.
