Amid the school’s 100th anniversary celebrations, Chestnut Hill College (CHC) honored graduates with its 98th annual commencement ceremonies on May 15 and 17. Over 300 students across all divisions received bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, while nearly 2,000 friends, family, and supporters attended.

The first ceremony presented degrees to students in the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS). State Rep. Justin Fleming (D) offered the commencement address. Fleming, who was elected to the state house in 2022, is an outspoken advocate for many social and economic justice initiatives, such as reducing income inequality and providing better access to healthcare.

Veronica Godboldt ’25, SCPS, gave the invocation and Tammeka Hill ’25, SGS gave the benediction, while Kia Callands ’25, SGS, there to receive her third master’s degree, was the welcome speaker.

During the ceremony, CHC alumna and board member Joanne McBride was given an honorary degree. Additionally, Diane Aldrete, an SCPS student who passed away earlier this year, was recognized with her degree of completion, as her husband Rich accepted on her behalf. The first graduating cohort of the college’s new M.B.A. was also recognized.

In the second ceremony, students in the School of Undergraduate Studies received their degrees. Anastasia Watson ’25 offered the invocation, Khuyen Nguyen ’25 gave the benediction, and Madisyn Hayes ’25 was the student welcome speaker.

Attendees listened to a rousing commencement address from Eddie S. Glaude Jr., Ph.D., a prominent scholar, author, and political commentator, who also received an honorary degree. Glaude writes on topics such as race and religion in America. He makes frequent media appearances as a Time magazine columnist and MSNBC contributor.

Additional honorary degrees were bestowed upon Sister Mary Helen Kashuba, Ph.D., a CHC professor of 62 years, and David Contosta, Ph.D., a CHC professor of 51 years who was profiled last week in the Local. John Lukacs, a former longtime CHC professor and renowned historian, received a posthumous honorary degree, presented to his daughter AnneMarie Cochrane.
