Charles Brune Levering, Jr., 81, a longtime resident of Chestnut Hill, died peacefully on August 3, 2026. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he graduated from Harvard College in 1973, attended The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and moved to the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia in 1978. Before college, he served four years in the United States Air Force, stationed in Ankara, Turkey. He would often speak of the weekly film screenings during his service as the source of his love for movies.

Throughout his life, he had a passion for baseball and coached his son’s Chestnut Hill Fathers’ Club baseball team to multiple championships. One of his prized possessions was a baseball cap signed by Brooks Robinson, the Hall of Fame third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles whom he personally met as a young man.

Charlie had a gregarious soul behind his near-permanent sunglasses. He prided himself on his ability to tell a story, and he loved to charm and be charmed by others. He was a sponge for world history and aspired to be a citizen of the world. A safari trip to East Africa and Zimbabwe in 1986 led to his founding a safari company which was among his business passions during his life.

For Charlie, New Hampshire was like a second home. As a boy, he was a camper at Camp Pasquaney on Newfound Lake where he earned the nickname “Chocko” - a name that endured throughout his camp years, summers as a counsellor, and well beyond. Many a summer his family and dear friends gathered on “Little Squam” Lake and soaked in the serenity and beauty of the White Mountains.
