Special activities will offer opportunities for learning through taste, touch, dancing, music-making, and more. • Gamelan music of Bali, Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. from 5-8 p.m. Hear traditional music of Gamelan performed by Gamelan Gita Santi, members of the South Philadelphia Indonesian community, led by Tom Whitman of Swarthmore College. The performance will take place as Chestnut Hill holds its Arts & Eats celebration.
• A night of Indonesian dance, Saturday, Nov. 8, 6-8 p.m., with the Modero Dance Company.
• A Davas Batik trunk show, with designer David Andreas, Saturday, Nov. 15, 1-4 p.m.
• Candlelight dinner with Chef Diana Widjojo, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 7 p.m. Widjojo, a James Beard-nominated, Philadelphia-based chef, and her partner, Jennifer Cowden, will serve their rice and sambal four-course dinner. Pre-registration is required: $85 per person, BYOB. Sign up at the shop or with their Evite.
• Immigrants in Philadelphia: A learning opportunity, Friday, Nov. 21, 7 p.m. An evening dedicated to learning from and with the local Indonesian immigrant community. The evening also will feature a screening of “Stitching of Hope,” a short film that portrays how trauma, memory, and identity interweave in the immigrant experience. Director Deddy Raksawardana will join the discussion.
• Indonesian singer Riyan on Stag & Doe Night, Wednesday, Dec. 3, 7 p.m.
• Liwetan dinner, Friday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m. A long stretch of banana leaves is spread on the table, which is layered with steamed rice surrounded by an array of savory side dishes - tempeh, spiced chicken, fragrant vegetables, sambal, crispy fish and more. Staff from Pecel Ndeso Catering will share their love of culture and home recipes. Pre-registration is required: $55 per person, but seating is limited and fills up quickly. BYOB and vegetarians are welcome. Sign up at the shop or through their Evite.
• On the Dec. 3, 10, and 17 Stag & Doe nights, From Bali to Us will offer Indonesian treats and tropical cheer.
